Victorian Aesthetic Movement Silver and Gold Brooch
Victorian Aesthetic Movement Silver and Gold Brooch
A charming late Victorian silver brooch, rectangular in form and richly decorated with finely hand-engraved floral and foliate motifs. The design centres on an engraved urn overflowing with flowers, enhanced by applied yellow gold highlights to the floral cluster and an ornate cartouche, creating an attractive two-tone effect typical of the Aesthetic Movement period. The brooch is further embellished with beaded and zig-zag borders, demonstrating the intricate workmanship and decorative exuberance popular during the final decades of the nineteenth century. Although unmarked, the construction, engraving style and applied gold decoration are consistent with quality Victorian silver work. The reverse retains its original pin and clasp fitting. The Aesthetic Movement, which flourished from the 1870s through the 1890s, celebrated beauty, craftsmanship and naturalistic ornamentation, and pieces such as this remain highly collectable for their decorative appeal and distinctly Victorian character.
