Bancroft Antiques ("we", "us", "our") respects your privacy. This policy explains what personal information we collect when you visit or buy from www.bancroftantiques.co.za, why we collect it, who we share it with, and what rights you have.

We process personal information in line with the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013 (POPIA).

  • Anything you include in an email, WhatsApp message or contact-form enquiry

Information collected automatically

When you browse our store, our platform and its analytics tools collect device and usage information such as your IP address, browser type, time zone, the pages you view, and how you arrived at our site. This is collected using cookies and similar technologies — see Cookies below.

Payment information

We do not collect or store your full card details. Payments are processed by our payment provider, which handles your card data under its own security standards (PCI-DSS).

Why we process it

Purpose Legal basis under POPIA
Processing and delivering your order Performance of our contract with you
Communicating about your order, returns or enquiries Performance of our contract / legitimate interest
Fraud prevention and transaction security Legal obligation / legitimate interest

We do not sell your personal information. Automated fraud screening may flag an order for review, but any decision to cancel an order is taken by a person, in line with section 71 of POPIA.

Who we share it with

We share your information only with the operators and service providers we need to run the store:

  • Shopify — our e-commerce platform, which hosts this store and processes orders on our behalf
  • Fastway Couriers and PostNet — to deliver your order; they receive your name, address and phone number
  • Our payment provider — to process your payment
  • Email and marketing tools — where you have subscribed to our mailing list
  • Our accountants, and SARS or other authorities — where required by law

Some of these providers process or store information outside South Africa. Section 72 of POPIA permits such transfers where the recipient is subject to a law, binding corporate rules or a binding agreement providing comparable protection, or where the transfer is necessary to perform our contract with you. We rely on these grounds and take reasonable steps to ensure your information stays protected.

Cookies

Our website uses cookies — small files stored on your device — to keep your cart working, remember your preferences, keep your session secure, and help us understand how the site is used.

You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings. Note that disabling essential cookies will stop parts of the store, including checkout, from working properly.

How long we keep it

We keep your information only as long as we need it:

  • Order and transaction records: at least 5 years, as required by South African tax legislation
  • Marketing subscriber details: until you unsubscribe
  • Enquiries that don't result in an order: up to 24 months

After that, information is deleted or de-identified.

How we protect it

We take reasonable technical and organisational measures to safeguard your information against loss, unauthorised access and misuse. Our store runs on Shopify's secure, encrypted (SSL/TLS) infrastructure, and access to customer data is limited to people who need it to fulfil your order.

If a security compromise affecting your personal information occurs, we will notify you and the Information Regulator as required by section 22 of POPIA.

Your rights

Under POPIA you have the right to:

  • Be told what personal information we hold about you
  • Access that information
  • Correct or delete information that is inaccurate, irrelevant, excessive, out of date, incomplete, misleading or unlawfully obtained
  • Object to the processing of your information on reasonable grounds
  • Withdraw consent to marketing at any time
  • Complain to the Information Regulator
  • Not receive unsolicited direct marketing — every marketing email we send includes an unsubscribe link

To exercise any of these rights, email bancroftjhb@gmail.com. Requests for access to your information are dealt with under PAIA, which allows us 30 days to respond and permits a prescribed fee. Objections to processing and to direct marketing must be made on the prescribed forms (POPIA Regulations Form 1 and Form 4) — ask us and we'll send them to you. We may ask you to verify your identity before we act on a request.

Our PAIA manual is available on request.

Marketing

We'll only send you marketing emails if you've asked us to, or if you're an existing customer and the message relates to similar items. You can opt out at any time using the unsubscribe link in any email, or by emailing us.

Children

Our store is not intended for anyone under 18, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has given us their information, contact us and we will delete it.

If you're not satisfied with how we've handled your information, you may lodge a complaint with:
