Refund policy

Bancroft Antiques Last updated: 27 August 2026

Buying an antique or a piece of vintage jewellery online asks a lot of trust. We do everything we can to earn it: every item is photographed from multiple angles and described in detail, including its condition and any wear, repair or imperfection we're aware of. If something still isn't right when it arrives, we'll put it right.

If your item isn't what you expected

Let us know within 24 hours of receiving your order by emailing bancroftjhb@gmail.com, and return the item to us within 3 days.

The item must come back:

  • in the same condition in which it was sent
  • with all original packaging and any documentation, boxes or pouches included

Once we receive it and confirm its condition, you may choose either:

  • a full refund of the purchase price, or
  • store credit to put toward another piece

How refunds are paid

Approved refunds are paid to the original payment method used at checkout. Depending on your bank or card issuer, funds typically reflect within 5 to 10 business days.

Return shipping

Please contact us before returning anything so we can agree on the safest way to send it back. Antique and jewellery pieces should be packed to the same standard they were sent in, and we'd strongly recommend a tracked, insured courier service — we're happy to arrange this for you.

  • Where the return is because the item was damaged in transit, faulty, or materially different from its description, Bancroft Antiques covers the cost of return shipping.
  • Where you are simply changing your mind, the direct cost of returning the item is for your account.

Please keep your tracking number until we've confirmed the return as received.

Items sold "as is"

Everything we sell is antique, vintage or pre-owned. These pieces carry the marks of their age and their previous lives.

Each listing includes a condition description for that specific item. Where you buy a piece having been told its condition, you accept it in that condition, and age-related characteristics that are disclosed or plainly visible in the listing — patina, small scratches, minor losses, old repairs, sizing marks, faint hallmarks — are not treated as faults.

This does not extend to anything we failed to disclose. See the next section.

Damage in transit

Your order is insured and remains our responsibility until it is signed for at the delivery address. If your parcel arrives damaged:

  1. Note the damage with the courier at the point of delivery if you can.
  2. Photograph the outer packaging and the item before unpacking any further.
  3. Email us at bancroftjhb@gmail.com within 24 hours of delivery.

We will handle the claim with the courier directly and arrange a full refund, or store credit if you'd prefer.

One-of-a-kind stock

Almost every item we sell is unique, so a straight exchange for an identical piece is usually not possible. Where you'd prefer a different piece to a refund, we're happy to issue store credit and help you find something you love.

Your rights under South African law

Nothing in this policy limits any right you have under the Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008 or the Electronic Communications and Transactions Act 25 of 2002. Where the law gives you a greater right than this policy does, the law applies.
