Large Antique Shell Cameo Pendant Brooch
Large antique carved shell cameo brooch in an ornate pinchbeck-style mount, the warm gilt frame with scrolling decoration surrounding a beautifully carved cameo. The shell cameo (41mm x 34mm oval) depicts a lady feeding a bird - probably Leda and the Swan (Zeus disguised) in a classical style. The mount tests as a copper-zinc alloy with remnants of original gilding. Fitted with a safety chain, as well as a hinged loop at the top of the reverse side, allowing the brooch to be used alternatively as a pendant.
