Victorian Brass and Wood Telescope by Chadburn, Liverpool

A superb mid-19th-century brass refracting telescope by Chadburn, one of Liverpool’s finest makers of scientific and nautical instruments. Beautifully engraved on the inner barrel:

“Chadburn – Optician &c to H.R.H. Prince Albert, 71 Lord Street, Liverpool.”

This royal-warrant inscription dates the instrument to the reign of Queen Victoria and the lifetime of Prince Albert, circa 1845–1860. Constructed with a large 65mm objective lens, three extending brass draws, and a polished hardwood main barrel – likely mahogany – this was the personal field telescope of a naval officer or gentleman traveller, not a mass-produced trade piece. Both sliding brass dust shutters (eyepiece and objective) remain intact, which is increasingly rare. The telescope retains its pleasing original patina, with lenses that appear reasonably clear and functional. Light surface wear is consistent with age, adding character without detracting from display value. An impressive and highly decorative scientific instrument – perfect for a study, library, nautical interior, or as a collector’s piece representing Victorian optical history.
