Maximilian was the brother of Franz-Joseph, Emperor of Austria and the rumoured illegitimate grandson of Napoleon. Napoleon III persuaded Maximilian to accept the Mexican imperial crown in 1864. He was crowned emperor in 1864 and entered Mexico City in 1865, having been supported in his progress to Mexico City by a French army. This coin was issued to commemorate the event. The French army was withdrawn, under United States pressure in 1866, and Maximilian was captured and executed in 1867 by an army led by Benito Juarez.
