Vintage 18ct Gold and Shell Cameo Bacchante Pendant Brooch

The large vintage 18ct yellow gold and shell cameo brooch has a hinged bale that allows it to be worn alternatively as a pendant. The brooch is in the form of an oval shell cameo, early 20th Century, exquisitely carved in somewhat high relief, and set in a later 18ct yellow (slightly rose) gold beaded surround. The oval cameo (circa 56mm x 42mm) shows a handsome, classical, young Bacchante, looking right, with an intricate grape-and-vine headdress. The frame is marked “18K”. The pin is steel.
Bacchantes, or Maenads, were the female followers of Dionysus, the god of the grape-harvest, wine, wine-making, and fertility, in Ancient Greek mythology.
