Victorian Gold and Diamond “Think of Me” Brooch

The antique mid-Victorian 6.6ct yellow gold “Think of Me” brooch is set with a small rose-cut diamond (circa 0.01ct). The brooch has intricate applied and engraved decoration on the front, and has a clear glass window in the back, which reveals a coiled lock of hair.

The brooch was probably made as a memento to remind the original holder of a loved one during a period of absence, rather than after passing. Mourning brooches, for after passing, became more of a feature in later Victorian times, particularly after the passing of Prince Albert in 1861.

The brooch is unmarked but has been electronically scanned and tests to be approximately 6.6ct (27.5%) gold. Such grades of gold were not unusual in the 18th and 19th Centuries. At that time grades of gold had not been standardised and there was no requirement to have items assayed and marked. The needle is not gold. The brooch is probably English.
