Silver Pendant with Maria Theresa Taler Coin

The vintage silver pendant is in the form of a Maria Theresa taler coin held in a looped wire silver frame. The pendant has a decorated bale. The pendant is unmarked. The coin weighs 28g and is made of 833 grade silver. The surround tests to be at least 800 grade silver and was probably made in Austria.

Maria Theresa was empress of Austria from 1740 to 1780. Various silver taler coins with the empress’ head were produced from 1741 onwards. This version has been produced since 1780. This taler was legal currency in Austria till 1858. It was used as currency in parts of north-east Africa and parts of Asia till after the 2nd World War. The taler is still being struck in Austria and has been produced in a number of other, non-Austrian locations.
