Raymond Peynet, born in Paris in 1908, was a famed illustrator and graphic artist, whose recognisable “Les Amoureux de Peynet” (The Love of Peynet) images have adorned not only porcelain produced by Rosenthal in Germany, but also scarves, dolls, the inner pages of books, medallions, statues (Hiroshima, Japan) and, according to Peynet himself, even the poem “Les bancs publics” (Public benches) by Georges Brassens. Four museums are dedicated to Peynet: one in Antibes, another in Brassac les Mines, and also in Karuizawa (near Nagano, Japan) and Mimasaka (near Okayama, Japan). He died in 1999 in Mougins, France.
