Large Modernist 18ct Gold and Black Opal Brooch Pendant
The 18ct gold brooch is in the Modernist style. It has two organically shaped gold panels with reticulated finish, above a bezel-set, free-form black opal. The brooch has a gold needle and, also, three loops that allow it to be worn alternatively as a pendant. (There is a single loop at the top for a thin chain, or for the attachment of a bale, and there are two larger loops on the second panel from the top, which would allow a thicker chain to be threaded.) The opal is a doublet (with a glass top protecting a slice of opal underneath) with magnificent deep blue and green opalescence. The brooch/ pendant is marked “conti; 18ct; CONTI”.
