Antique Silver-front 9ct Gold Diamond Brooch

The antique (circa mid-19th Century) silver-fronted, approximately 9ct yellow gold brooch has a roughly round, open work body, with a floriate design. The brooch set with many rose-cut diamonds which are all in foiled settings (closed at the back). The evaluation of the stones is slightly difficult as their cut is somewhat irregular and, being foiled, it is difficult to assess their depth and colour. This is very typical of jewellery from this period. There are three largish diamonds (circa 0.35-4.0ct each); four near round diamonds of about 0.18ct each; 12 diamonds averaging about 0.02ct each; 12 small diamonds averaging about 0.0125ct each and about 30 very small diamonds averaging about 0.005ct each. This gives a total of about 2.5ct of diamonds. Two small and one very small diamond is lacking, only obvious under very close inspection. The brooch is unmarked. The gold tests to be approximately 9ct yellow gold. At this period there was no requirement for jewellery to be given an assay mark or to have a precise caratage such as 9ct or 18ct.
