Antique Georgian Rose Gold and Diamond Brooch
Antique Georgian Rose Gold and Diamond “Flower and Leaves” Brooch
The large, mid-18th Century flower and leaves brooch has a rose gold appearance. The metal has been electronically tested and found to be 15.3% gold, 30.8% silver, and 52% copper. This translates to 3.7ct gold, with the copper imparting the rose colour, and the gold and silver content sufficient to prevent significant tarnishing. The brooch has a later 9ct gold safety chain and pin.
The brooch has one set of leaves hinged, to lend movement to the brooch.
The brooch is set with 89 rose-cut diamonds totalling approximately 1.5ct. The irregular nature of the cut of the diamonds makes an accurate assessment of the weight of the diamonds difficult. The largest diamond is approximately oval-cut (approximately 6.2mm x 5.5mm – circa 0.5ct). The diamonds all have irregular cuts and are of varying quality. There are six spaces where diamonds appear to be lacking, though only visible when looked at very closely.
The value of an item like this lies in its design and age, rather than in the quality of the stones. The brooch is not marked. There are some signs of solder repair visible on the back.
