The antique, 9ct yellow gold brooch is silver-fronted. It has an open-work, stylised leaf and flower design. The stems of the flowers have a beaded finish. There is a central, oval element set with diamonds. The leaves and flower are set with diamonds, opals, rubies and blue sapphires. There are:

Roundish, old-cut diamonds – 61 in total. 45 diamonds are circa 1.25mm diameter; eight diamonds are circa 2mm diameter; and eight diamonds are circa 2.4mm diameter – approximately 1.25ct in total. The colour of the diamonds is I-J and the clarity is VS-SI;

Oval, mixed-cut, red, synthetic rubies - four in total. The rubies are approximately 6mm x 4mm – circa 2.5ct in total;

Round-cut, synthetic blue sapphires - six in total. The sapphires are approximately 2mm diameter – circa 0.20ct in total;

Round, cabochon polished, opals - eight in total. The opals are circa 2.0mm diameter; The opals are clear white with some green and blue opalescence;

The brooch is unmarked but tests to be 9ct yellow gold with a silver front. Silver-fronted jewellery was popular through the 18th and 19th Centuries until replaced by platinum and white gold fronts in the early 20th Century. Synthetic, nature-identical, laboratory-grown rubies and sapphires were available quite early in the 19th Century but larger stones which were easy to cut became more generally available after 1877. We judge this brooch to have been made between 1880 and 1900.
