Antique 18ct Gold and “Mine Cut” Diamond Ring
Antique 18ct Gold and “Mine Cut” Diamond Ring
The antique, 18ct gold ring is claw-set with a circa 1.06ct slightly oval “Mine Cut” diamond. “Mine Cut” diamonds are diamonds which have an old, slightly irregular cut, with a wider girdle relative to its shallow depth, than a modern brilliant-cut would have. It also has a typical culet (truncated bottom point). This indicates that the diamond was probably cut in India in the late 19th Century. This type of cut produces a softer sparkle than a modern cut, and visually exaggerates the size of the diamond in a very pleasing way. This type of cut is now quite scarce. The colour of the stone is P and the clarity is SI1. This is quite a good quality for a “Mine Cut” stone, which were generally cut for size rather than clarity.
The ring has a yellow gold shank and applied white gold head and decorated shoulders.
The diamond measures 7.6mm x 6.8mm x 3.4mm – 1.06ct; colour P; clarity SI1.
The ring is marked “18ct”.
