9ct Gold & Onyx Brooch attributed to Erich Frey

The large, vintage 9ct yellow gold brooch is a Modernist design. It has a large, central, oval, flattened cabochon onyx (circa 50mm x 40mm). A number of stylised protrusions radiate from the centre. Three of these are set with pear-shaped cabochon onyx (circa 15mm / 12mm x 12,5mm / 10mm).  The pendant is marked “9”.

The brooch is attributed to Erich Frey of Pretoria. It is clearly in the style of Erich Frey and came from a collection of jewellery by Erich Frey. There is relatively little space for marks on the metal of the brooch and Erich Frey sometimes only stamped partial, or no marks when space was short. The brooch can be quite effectively worn as a pendant with a thong or chain threaded through it.
