18ct Gold, Brown Pearl and Antique V.O.C. Coin Necklace
The freshwater brown pearl necklace is probably relatively modern and appears to have been made to show off the original, antique, V.O.C. coins in 18ct gold settings. The coins are copper half duits coins minted for use in the East Indies by VOC (Vereenigde Oostindische Compagnie – Dutch East India Company). They are dated 1788; 1787; 1789 with ‘lion with wavy lines’; ‘double lion’; and ‘single lion” crests respectively on the obverse. The coins are mounted in hand-made 18ct yellow gold, grooved holders, and they are centred, at intervals, in a brown pearl necklace consisting of 42 potato-shaped, brown, freshwater pearls (circa 8-8.5mm diameter). The necklace has a magnetic yellow metal clasp. The gold coin frames are unmarked but have been electronically scanned and test to be 18ct yellow gold
