18ct Gold, Diamond and Carnelian Necklace by Margaret Richardson
18ct Gold, Diamond and Carnelian Modernist Necklace by Margaret Richardson
The vintage, Modernist style, 18ct yellow gold pendant has circular element mounted with a doughnut-shaped, polished carnelian gemstone surrounding a claw-set round, old-cut diamond (circa 5mm / 0.5ct, colour I-J, clarity VS1). This circular element is surrounded by an open-work rectangular yellow gold frame, and both are set on two vertical yellow gold bars that extend up to where a loop is fixed at the rear. The pendant is supported from this loop by a thin yellow gold circular wire choker. The pendant is marked “18CT”.
The design is representative of the work by Margaret Richardson, and is attributed to her. Margaret Richardson was born and trained in Germany before WWII. She settled in South Africa after the war, worked in Johannesburg in the 1960’s and 1970’s, and became well known for her hand-made gold and silver jewellery, which was generally in the Modernist style.
