Vintage Erich Frey Sterling Silver and 18ct Yellow Gold Pendant Brooch

This striking rectangular modernist brooch measures approximately 5cm x 3cm x 1cm and is crafted in a bold geometric style combining sterling silver (stamped “925”) and additional elements such as 18ct yellow gold accents and wood. The brooch weighs 24.6g in total, with an estimated 3g of 18ct gold incorporated into the design. The front features an asymmetrical composition of contrasting textures and materials: a polished silver channel to the left, a matte textured silver panel to the right, a striped mixed-material triangular inset, a polished gold panel, and a raised spiral motif in 18ct yellow gold – a signature detail often associated with mid-20th century modernist jewellery. The reverse is fitted with a secure pin clasp and is clearly stamped “efrey”, “18ct”, and “925” both on the silver body and beneath the gold panel, confirming the mixed-metal construction. The brooch can also be worn as a pendant on a cord or chain, making it a versatile piece of wearable art.

Erich Frey (1904-1988) was a highly regarded German-born master goldsmith who emigrated to South Africa in the 1930s. Trained in Europe during the height of the Bauhaus and modernist design movements, Frey brought a new aesthetic to South African jewellery – clean architectural lines, innovative mixed metals, and abstract forms. Based in Pretoria, he established Erich Frey Jewellers, producing both bespoke commissions and unique studio pieces. Frey also contributed extensively to goldsmithing education in South Africa, mentoring a generation of jewellers and helping to elevate contemporary jewellery to an art form in the country. Today, his signed pieces are highly sought after by collectors of modernist and South African studio jewellery.
