Vintage Claw Brooch by Simba, South Africa
 
The vintage South African brooch is in the form of a shield with two spears with a lion’s claw decorated with a leafed twig.  The brooch is marked “AFRICA; Simba; hand made”.
 
Simba was formed around 1955 in Rosslyn near Pretoria by Messrs Joubert, Dreyer and Stanford. They worked mainly in silver, silver plate and copper, manufacturing jewellery and curios expressly for the tourist industry. They sometimes used lion and leopard claws, animal hair and teeth in their jewellery in the years that followed. They stopped working in the 1980’s.
